Font nut

Posted by: Remco In: general| web links

I admit I’m a bit of a font junkie. I have 3572 fonts installed on my computer (no, seriously) and am always looking for new and exciting fonts to pop-up here and there. I don’t know exactly why I like typography so much because I have no interest in developing my own font. No, that’s not true, I remember trying to make my own handwriting into a computer font. The idea seems really cool, but I haven’t found a service yet good enough to settle my personal typhgraphic needs…

There are lot’s of great websites out there to download all sorts of fonts, so I figured I would share some of my favorites with you:

  • 25 best fonts – the article from geek ramblings that inspired this post linked to this list of 25 very nice fonts (some are only for Mac).
  • Da Font – a great source with thousands of fonts. I always have to stop myself from downloading all of them.
  • Abstract Fonts – very nice source for clean fonts. I like the top 100 features.
  • Simply the Best – I like the handwriting section.
  • Silkscreen – very cool font from Kottke.org meant to be used in small size.
  • Famous Fonts – seen a font on a TV show, movie, music video, or on a product? If it’s famous this website will have it to download.
  • Identifont – seen a font somewhere and you want to know what it is? Try this website. I will usually output a commercial font…just plug that name into Google and in many instances you can find a free (knock-off) version that looks just like it.
  • Now if I can only find a good application to turn my handwriting into a nice looking font…

[...] To make a long story short, after a long trail and error and Google and Adobe searches I found that if the resource use of the process csrss.exe ever spikes during your Photoshop use, try reducing your number of fonts. As you know I’m a bit of a font junkie…but I might have gone a little overboard installing 7500 of them. At least Photoshop surely thought so. Now I’m using Font Export 2005 to manage my fonts and install only the ones I need or frequently use. Not only Photoshop likes this, Windows XP got a lot faster as well. Problem solved. [...]

Who am I? That's a pretty big question for such a small space. Check out my about page to read where I come from, check my LinkedIn profile to see what I did and that should give you a pretty good overview.
